MTV in The 90s

The Analog Rebellion

Look, before I was on Fox News or writting for the Daily Mail, I was a hyper-caffeinated VJ in the MTV trenches, perpetually one snarky comment away from being fired. In an era where "Alternative" was being sold to you like a pre-packaged grunge starter kit, I was the one refusing to read the teleprompter.

Whether I was engaging in a legendary deadpan stand-off with Dinosaur Jr., interupting the single best live performance ever with Nirvana, or just praying the Beastie Boys wouldn't light the set on fire, it was never polished, always awkward, and 100% unscripted.

Radiohead Beach House

An infamous meeting with the Radiohead band. It’s the perfect example of "oil and water" Kennedy’s high energy vs. thier moody reluctance.

The John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) Exit

A classic "professional disruptor" moment where Kennedy’s questions get under the skin of the original punk rebel, leading to him ripping off his mic and walking away.

Woodstock 1994

While the performance is legendary, Kennedy’s segments around the 1994 Woodstock and Unplugged era show her at the center of the grunge peak.

The "Most Hated VJ" Acceptance Speech

The legendary promo where she accepts her "Most Hated VJ" award from Rolling Stone with a crown and a bouquet of dead flowers.

The Nirvana "Unplugged" Request (1994)

The most famous live performance ever, and Kennedy was right in the middle of it; fast-forward to 59:10 in the video for the interaction among Kurt, Dave, and Kennedy.

The Nine Inch Nails / Trent Reznor Sessions

These clips highlight her deep connection to the industrial rock scene and her ability to get candid responses from a notoriously private Reznor.

The Dinosaur Jr. Stand-off (1993)

Perhaps her most "surreal" interview. Kennedy navigates an almost catatonic J Mascis, turning a potentially disastrous silence into a masterclass in deadpan interviewing.

The Giuliani Incident (1994 VMAs)

Fast forward to 6 minutes into the video to see the now-famous incident between Kennedy and the newly elected Rudy Giuliani (mayor of NYC). Also a follow-up at 17:45.
